How to Fix a Tablet That Charges Slowly

Short answer: Slow charging usually means the tablet is not getting the power it expects. Work through four areas: the charger, the cable, the charging port, and software. Try the charger and cable that came with the tablet, inspect and clean the port gently, close heavy background apps, and let the tablet cool if it is hot. USB Power Delivery, the standard used by USB-C charging, requires both the charger and the tablet to agree on voltage and current. When they do not agree, the tablet drops to a slower charge rate.

Start with the charger

The charger is the first place to look. USB has grown from a data connection into a primary source of power for small devices, and tablets expect a charger that can supply the power they request. If the charger cannot deliver enough power, the tablet simply charges more slowly.

USB Power Delivery is the standard that lets a charger and a tablet negotiate power over a single cable. Before the 2021 update, USB Power Delivery was limited to 100W using a 20V solution with Type-C cables rated for 5A; the newer revision can deliver up to 240W over a full-featured Type-C cable and connector. A charger built to an older or lower-power profile may not support the power profile the tablet asks for, so charging falls back to a slower rate.

Use the charger that came with the tablet, or another charger from the tablet maker that lists compatibility with your model. If you use a generic charger, choose one labeled for USB Power Delivery. The label on the adapter tells you what it can supply, and a wide mismatch between the charger and the tablet explains a slow top-up.

Check the cable

The cable is the second most common cause. A cable that is damaged, very long, or not built for power delivery can add resistance and stop the charger and tablet from completing a fast negotiation. USB Power Delivery relies on a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector, and the USB Type-C specification defines cable requirements for higher power levels.

Try a different cable, preferably one that came with the tablet. If you need a longer cable, keep the tablet as close to the charger as practical; very long cables with thin conductors may not carry the same power as a shorter cable.

Inspect both ends of the cable for bent pins, frayed insulation, or debris. A damaged connector can make the tablet charge slowly or intermittently, even when the charger itself is fine.

Inspect the charging port

The port on the tablet is next. Dust, lint, and pocket debris can build up inside a USB-C port and keep the plug from seating fully. If the cable connects only partway, the tablet may not complete the power negotiation and will charge at a slower rate.

Turn the tablet off and look into the port under a bright light. If you see debris, remove it carefully with a non-conductive tool such as a wooden toothpick or plastic pick. Do not use metal, and do not force anything into the port. A step-by-step version lives in how to clean the charging port.

If the port is clean but the plug wobbles, the port may be loose or worn. A worn port can still deliver some power, but it may drop to a slower rate or charge only at certain angles. See tablet charging port loose for what to do next.

Look at software and charging habits

Software affects charging more than many people expect. If the screen is on, the processor is busy, or heavy apps are running, the tablet is drawing power at the same time the battery is being charged. The result is a slower net charge. Close background apps, turn the screen off, or let the tablet rest while it charges.

Efficiency programs such as ENERGY STAR encourage computers, including tablets, to use efficient components and manage energy use when idle. A tablet that is busy with updates, downloads, or syncing may not manage energy as well as one sitting idle. After a major OS update, background maintenance can also make charging look slow for a while; a restart often clears it. If you need the basics, see tablet battery charging tips.

Heat can further slow charging. If the tablet feels warm, its charging controller may reduce input power to keep the battery cool. Move it to a cool place, remove any case that traps heat, and wait for the battery temperature to settle before you judge the charge rate.

When the problem is inside the tablet

If a known-good charger, cable, and port still leave the tablet charging slowly, look at the battery and charging circuit. An aging battery may accept charge at a reduced rate; a swollen battery is a safety concern and should be replaced. See tablet battery replacement guide and tablet battery health.

The charging port itself can fail internally, especially after many months of use. If the port is loose, the charging circuit is faulty, or there is damage on the board, the tablet may need service. A repair shop can test the port and battery; see tablet charging port replacement if you want the repair options.

Choose your next tablet with charging in mind

If you are tired of slow charging, the next tablet should make charging simple. USB-C with USB Power Delivery is the common standard: it lets one charger work across many devices, and it supports the higher power levels that fill a tablet faster. Android tablets and Windows tablets commonly use USB-C Power Delivery; Apple tablets have their own consistent charging setups.

For a tablet you will carry outdoors, a rugged model with an accessible battery can be easier to keep charged; see rugged tablets. For light use, a basic tablet with long battery life may matter more than the fastest charge; see basic tablets. Charging speed depends on the whole system of charger, cable, port, and management software; see tablet charging speed for a fuller picture.

Questions

Why does my tablet charge slowly with a phone charger?

A phone charger may not supply the power your tablet asks for. USB Power Delivery lets the charger and tablet negotiate voltage and current, but if the charger does not support the right power profile, the tablet takes what it can get. Use the charger that came with the tablet or one labeled for USB Power Delivery.

Can a bad cable slow charging even if the charger is fine?

Yes. A worn cable, an overly long cable, or one built only for data can add resistance and prevent a fast power negotiation. Try the cable that came with the tablet, or a cable labeled for USB Power Delivery.

Does using the tablet while it charges make charging slower?

It can. The screen and processor draw power while the battery is charging, so the net charge rate falls. If the tablet warms up, its charging controller may also lower input power. For the fastest charge, turn the screen off and let the tablet rest.

Why did charging slow down after a software update?

An update can trigger background maintenance that drains power for a while. Restart the tablet and give it a day or two before judging. If charging remains slow, check for another update and look at the battery section in settings.

When should I take a slow-charging tablet for repair?

Try a known-good charger, cable, and clean port first. If the tablet still charges slowly, or if the port wobbles, the battery swells, or the tablet gets unusually hot, the battery, port, or charging circuit may need service.
