How to Rebuild the Recovery Partition on a Tablet

Short answer: If your tablet can no longer enter recovery mode, you can rebuild the recovery partition using the official tools from your operating system vendor. On Windows tablets, use the Windows Recovery Environment from a recovery drive or the built-in reset functions. On Android tablets made by major brands, use the vendor's firmware restoration utility, often distributed as a PC application that flashes the full OS image including the recovery partition. Back up your data first, and confirm your specific model is supported before starting.

When you would rebuild the recovery partition

The recovery partition holds the minimal environment your tablet loads when the main OS cannot start. On Windows tablets this environment is the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). On Android tablets it is a small boot image that provides factory reset, cache wiping, and firmware update functions.

You would rebuild it when the partition becomes corrupted or missing. Symptoms include a tablet that boots directly to a black screen, loops back to the firmware logo, or shows a message that no recovery environment was found.

Some tablets allow you to access recovery mode by holding a volume key while powering on. If that combination no longer does anything, the recovery image itself may be damaged. Before attempting a rebuild, confirm the tablet still responds to basic input and that the battery is adequately charged. A tablet that will not power on at all may have a different fault; see our tablet wont power on guide before proceeding.

Before you begin: back up and identify your device

Rebuilding the recovery partition is an advanced procedure. The official tools described in this article may rewrite the entire operating system storage, not just the recovery image. Any personal files stored on the internal drive can be erased during the process. Make a complete backup to an external drive or cloud service first. Our tablet backup and restore guide covers the options.

You also need to identify the exact brand, model, and operating system version of your tablet. For Windows tablets, note the edition and version of Windows installed. For Android tablets, note the manufacturer, model number, and Android version. The official restoration tool for your device will require this information to download the correct firmware.

The Android Open Source Project maintains the core Android platform as an open-source project, but each tablet maker builds its own recovery UI and ships its own restoration software; there is no single universal tool across all brands.

Windows tablets: rebuild with built-in tools

Windows tablets store recovery information in a dedicated partition. If that partition is damaged, Windows includes a few official ways to restore it. The simplest path starts inside Windows itself: open Settings, go to Update and Security, then Recovery. The "Reset this PC" option can reinstall Windows while keeping your files. This process recreates the system and recovery partitions from the Windows image stored on the device.

If your Windows tablet will not boot at all, you need a recovery drive created on another computer. Use the official Microsoft media creation tool to write Windows installation media to a USB drive. Boot the tablet from that drive, choose Repair your computer, and then select Troubleshoot and Command Prompt to run the official recovery commands.

Two commands rebuild the recovery environment. The first, reagentc /info, shows the current status and location of the WinRE partition. The second, reagentc /rebuild, scans for Windows installations and recreates the recovery environment. Run these from the Command Prompt in the recovery environment, not from inside the normal Windows desktop.

After the commands complete, restart the tablet and test that recovery mode loads. If the tablet still will not enter recovery, the Windows installation itself may be damaged beyond a simple partition rebuild. In that case, a full reinstall from the recovery drive is the official fallback. Our tablet os reinstall guide walks through the full process.

  • Open Settings and confirm your Windows version and edition.
  • Create a recovery drive on another PC using the official Windows media creation tool.
  • Boot the tablet from the recovery drive, enter Troubleshoot, then Command Prompt.
  • Run reagentc /info to check the current recovery environment status.
  • Run reagentc /rebuild to restore the Windows Recovery Environment.

Windows tablets: firmware tools from the maker

Beyond the built-in Windows tools, some tablet makers distribute their own firmware restoration application for Windows devices. These official utilities download the full factory image from the vendor and write it to the tablet, restoring every partition including recovery to the original state.

These tools are specific to the tablet maker. For example, the maker of a 2-in-1 Windows tablet may provide a recovery image you download by entering the tablet's serial number. The downloaded file is typically an executable that creates a USB recovery drive. Booting from that drive runs the vendor's restoration process.

Always download these tools from the maker's official support site. A search for your model name and the words "recovery image" or "restore utility" on the vendor's own domain should find the correct page. Third-party download sites may offer modified or outdated images that can make the problem worse.

The process takes time. A full firmware restore can take an hour or more depending on the size of the system image and the speed of the USB drive. The tablet may reboot several times. Leave it plugged into power throughout and do not disconnect the USB drive until the tool reports completion.

If your Windows tablet came with a keyboard, keep it attached for this procedure. Some restoration utilities require keyboard input to confirm steps. For advice on choosing a tablet that is easy to restore, see our best Windows tablets guide.

Android tablets: use the vendor's restore tool

Android tablets do not have one universal recovery partition tool. Each maker ships its own official firmware flashing application for Windows PCs. Samsung provides Smart Switch for data backup and emergency recovery, and the firmware restoration path within it. Lenovo offers a rescue and smart assistant tool that downloads and flashes the factory image. Other brands have equivalents, often named "repair tool" or "support tool."

These tools require the tablet to be in a special mode. The exact key combination varies by brand, but almost every Android tablet enters its bootloader or download mode by holding a volume key while connecting the USB cable to a computer. The vendor's tool detects the tablet in this mode and flashes the complete firmware package.

The official firmware package for your exact model number contains the recovery image, the boot image, and the system partition. Flashing this package rebuilds not only recovery but the entire Android installation, which also resolves boot loops and update failures. If the tablet cannot enter download mode at all, the underlying storage or bootloader may be the problem; see our tablet firmware recovery mode stuck guide.

USB debugging is not required for this kind of restoration because the vendor's tool communicates with the bootloader directly. However, the tablet needs a reliable USB cable and a PC with the maker's USB drivers installed. The vendor's tool usually offers to install these drivers during setup. Our install tablet drivers windows guide covers the general process.

Android tablets: command-line recovery as a fallback

If your Android tablet's maker does not provide a restore tool, or you are comfortable with a command line, the Android SDK includes two official utilities: adb and fastboot. These are published by Google as part of the Android development tools, not by your tablet's maker.

With the tablet booted into its bootloader mode, the fastboot command can flash individual partitions. You would need the recovery image file for your exact model, typically extracted from the vendor's official firmware package. Then the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img writes the image to the recovery partition.

This approach is precise but carries risk. Flashing the wrong image, or an image built for a different model, can leave the tablet unable to boot at all. Only use this method when the vendor's official restore tool is unavailable, and verify the recovery image checksum against the value published by the maker. Our tablet adb fastboot guide explains both utilities in detail.

Note that many Android tablets shipped after 2020 verify the signature of the recovery image. An image that is not signed by the vendor will be rejected even if it appears to flash successfully.

What to do after rebuilding

Once the rebuild finishes, the tablet should boot into the operating system normally. Test that recovery mode works before relying on it. On Windows, the command reagentc /info should show the WinRE location as enabled. On Android, reboot into recovery using the key combination and confirm the menu appears.

Then reinstall your apps and restore your data from the backup you made before starting. Run the operating system update check to confirm the tablet is on the current version; a freshly restored image may be older than the latest release. Our tablet os update install guide covers the update process.

If the tablet fails to boot even after a successful rebuild, the problem may be hardware-related. Corrupted storage or a failing internal drive can mimic recovery partition damage. At that point, contact the maker's support or consider a repair; see our tablet logic board repair guide for an overview of what that involves.

Questions

Is rebuilding the recovery partition safe?

It is safe when you use the official tools and firmware for your exact model. The risk comes from using unofficial images or tools that write the wrong data to the partition. Back up your files first because the process may erase the internal storage.

Will rebuilding the recovery partition erase my files?

Possibly. The vendor's firmware restoration tools on Android tablets typically rewrite the entire storage, removing all personal data. On Windows, the Reset this PC option can reinstall Windows while keeping files, but a clean recovery drive install will erase everything.

My tablet will not enter recovery mode at all. Can I still rebuild it?

Yes, but you need a computer. On Windows tablets, boot from a USB recovery drive. On Android tablets, connect the tablet to a PC and place it into download mode while holding the volume key; the vendor's tool will detect it even if the recovery partition is broken.

What if my Android tablet maker does not provide a restore tool?

Check the maker's support site for a firmware image. If none exists, the fastboot command in the Android SDK can flash the recovery image directly, provided your tablet's bootloader supports fastboot and the image is signed by the vendor.
